Letter N Week
1/30/26
Dear TK Families,
It was a nifty and neat week as we navigated the letter N! The children experimented with Newton’s Law of Inertia, designed buildings out of newspapers, and learned some about nocturnal animals.
This week, we discussed Newton’s Law of Inertia. We first discussed who Isaac Newton was – a scientist and a physicist. We talked about how he explored the concept of gravity and discovered something called “The Laws of Motion.” His Law of Inertia says that “an object at rest stays at rest unless an outside force is strong enough to make it move.” The boys and girls tested this theory out using blocks and index cards with strings attached. Each child had a turn to help us build the tower – block, index card, block, index card, etc. Then, each child had a turn to come up and try to pull the index card out without knocking down the blocks. This was a huge hit and everyone was cheering for each other! Ask your child about this fun experiment!
We had a several day Star art activity this week using newspapers, paint, and scissors. We listened to the book The Big Orange Splot by Daniel Pinkwater. This story is about a man who loves to live in his wild and colorfully painted house. For this project, we encouraged the children to create a building (like in the story) out of painted newspaper. First, they painted a BUNCH of newspaper. After the newspaper dried, the children cut out the newspaper and designed their building. Did your child make a house? A castle? A hotel?
Some questions to ask your child:
1. Can your child tell you about our other Newton experiment? (penny and cup)
2. Can your child tell you about our The Napping House math? How many feet/paw prints were in your child’s house?
3. Ask your child about the Science Guy, did they enjoy it?
Next week, we will not be having a Letter of the Week as we will be focusing on Numbers.
Have a fantastic weekend!
Best,
Lynn, Mandee and Emily
